It has been days of the start of the Hungry Ghost Festival in Singapore. Well... for some who do not know what is the Hungry Ghost Festival is about, here's a brief explanation for you.
The Hungry Ghost Festival falls on the seventh lunar month of the Chinese lunar calendar when the gates of hell open and the dead walk among the living.
Yeap, you heard the stories of sightings of the supernatural and the sixth sense of 'special' people raging during such a period. I do not know how true these are, however, like most people say, it's better to believe and avoid than to deny and experience it first-hand.
I remember the days where I would crawl under the blanket and cover myself to avoid seeing anything in the dark. The times, when I would request from my parents to turn on the lights every night to ensure that no ghost would appear (as I thought that they were afraid of lights).
This was during the time where movies and tv series shows that ghost are afraid of lights and would go away upon it. However, things started to change when people portray them, as powerful creatures... that can have the power to destroy the light source by flickering the light on and off and suddenly appearing in front of you. Then I prayed real hard each night to avoid meeting one... (Even as I am typing now, my hair is standing from my hairs and back)...
Soon, it seems that no matter how you hide yourself, you would still be able to meet one luckily or unluckily... However, as I grew older, Jedi taught me something that is really true. He said: "If you respect the place, the place will respect you and allow you to pass or stay"... however, if you do not... things would be very different and difficult for you.
I remember the stories he told at night, when I was still a scout. It really freaked me out... I was like, WTH! If something were to happen to me, I would surely faint.
Ultimately, I believe the scariest thing on Earth is humans themselves... they have the power of imagination that could come up with the most freaky and scary things... think about it, humans created the A-tom bombs and other chemical dangers to the environment and other humans. Watching those zombie shows such as Resident Evil or 28 days later... I really wonder, if ever something were to happen to humans in such a way... Would we really be able to survive again?
Well, for this month, fellow friends... just mind your steps (especially) and languages. You wouldn't want to mess with trouble itself. :)
